Electric Car Plugs into Aerodynamics

Byron Center Public Schools, MI —  Byron Center High School senior Trevor Hofman’s specially designed sprockets will help electric cars zoom around the Berlin Raceway, in Marne. The sprockets’ interior is embellished with dog bone and paw print-shaped cutouts, in honor of the Bulldog mascot.

… Machines buzz and sparks fly as students work in teams to perfect their vehicles. Machinery includes two tool room CNC mills, recently donated by Grand Rapids Community College, and a 3-D printer.

Farmington Hills welcomes new police officer

New Farmington Hills Police Officer Victoria Ward was sworn in December 14, by City Clerk Pam Smith.

Ward holds an Associate’s Degree in Law Enforcement from Grand Rapids Community College. She worked as a security supervisor at Gerald Ford International Airport and completed 90 hours of internship with the City of Wyoming Police Department.

In November 2015, Ward graduated from the Grand Rapids Community College Police Academy, where she was promoted to squad leader and was described as hardworking, dedicated and honest.

Expansion of health sciences education to address talent needs in West Michigan

A partnership between three community colleges and Grand Rapids-area care providers brings a traditional model for training talent into a new area: health care.

Grand Rapids Community College, Muskegon Community College and Montcalm Community College teamed with West Michigan Works! to form a pilot apprenticeship program to train and employ medical assistants at local health care organizations.

West Michigan craft brewing programs gain momentum

As the craft brewing industry continues to grow in West Michigan, several higher education institutions have begun to take action to address brewers talent needs.

Aquinas men’s soccer earns WHAC Honors

Grand Rapids, MI- Aquinas College was well represented in the All-WHAC Men’s Soccer selections. Headlining the honorees for the Saints with First Team accolades were Matt Jackson and Aldony Mendez.

… Jackson (Kalamazoo/GRCC) started all 17 games for the Saints and anchored the stingiest defense in the conference. Overall the Saints allowed .65 goals against per contest and were ranked fourth nationally with eleven shutouts.

… GRAND RAPIDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Selena Golnick (Cadillac) had 16 kills, one assist and 18 digs in a 3-1 win against Muskegon Community College. She also added six kills, two assists, three blocks and seven digs in a 3-0 win over Kellogg Community College.

GRCC volleyball advances to the NJCAA District E tournament

GVSU leads nation in low-income student enrollment

Grand Valley State University was recently recognized as one of just ten colleges and universities in the nation that enrolls a high number of low-income students while also maintaining strong academic performance among its campus community.

… “Seventy-five percent of non-Pell students attend four-year institutions, while only 55 percent of Pell eligible students pick four-year colleges; rather, they are more likely to attend a two-year college or a proprietary college,” she (Lynn Blue, vice president for Enrollment Development) said. “The last numbers that I have seen, Grand Rapids Community College reported 52 percent of their students were Pell-eligible.”

Muskegon Community College recap: Cross Country Women, Men finish 4th, 5th in region

… WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL: The Jayhawks dropped to 20-14 overall and 10-4 and third-place in the conference with a 4-set loss at Grand Rapids Community College Tuesday. The set scores were 25-23, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-18. Ashly Schuitema connected for 17 kills and two blocks, Rachel Brown contributed 12 kills and five blocks, Hannah Deblois added 12 kills, Lindsey Jacobs had 45 assists and two aces and Marissa Hassevoort added 34 digs to lead the Jayhawks. MCC hosts the Region XII tournament this Friday-Sunday, Nov. 6-8.

Police Academy to dedicate memorial to fallen alumni

Police Academy staff and students will dedicate a memorial to the program’s fallen alumni at 1:30 p.m. November 5.

Academy students have worked for more than a year to raise money and solicit donations for a memorial honoring alumni Bruce Van Popering, Robert Kozminski and Eric Zapata. Representatives of the officers’ departments and their families have been invited to the dedication near the academy’s scenario training house on GRCC’s DeVos Campus. The ceremony will include a rifle salute, and the entire campus is invited.

Three Police Academy alumni have died in the line of duty:

  • Van Popering, an officer with the East Grand Rapids Department of Public Safety, died from injuries sustained after being struck by a vehicle while directing traffic after July 4th celebrations in 1994; he was a 1992 graduate.
  • Kozminski, an officer with the Grand Rapids Police Department, was fatally shot in 2007; he was a 1999 graduate.
  • Zapata, an officer with the Kalamazoo Public Safety Department, was fatally shot in 2011; he was a 1998 graduate.

IONIA — The Ionia County Sheriff’s Office is welcoming a new deputy to the force.

… (Derrick) Madsen is also a 2014 graduate of Grand Rapids Community College with a degree in criminal justice. The FTO program teams new officers up an experienced or senior member of the department as they learn the ropes of procedure.

MCC plays host to apprenticeship workshop Nov. 4

… MCC was awarded a $3.9 million federal grant to fund the program. The grant will help Macomb, in partnership with Grand Rapids Community College, expand apprenticeship opportunities in manufacturing and information technology.

As students prepare for college, they get a lesson in historically black universities

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – As she walked into Grand Rapids Community College Saturday, Keli Christopher’s goal was twofold. She wanted to introduce black students to careers in science, technology, engineering and math, and she wanted to convince them that the best place to pursue such careers was historically black colleges and universities, or HBCUs.

Grand Rapids celebrates National Chemistry Week

KENTWOOD, Mich. (WZZM) — It’s National Chemistry Week and Saturday is the perfect day to peak your little scientist’s interest by bringing them to experience interactive chemistry demonstrations at Woodland Mall. It’s happening from noon until 4:00 p.m. Saturday near the Macy’s entrance.

Two-year schools see mixed results for millage requests

Schoolcraft College isn’t the only two-year college in Michigan to go to voters to ask for a millage increase in recent years.

… Another school that saw the request turned down recently was Grand Rapids Community College, which had several millage increases turned down in the last decade, the most recent being in 2012. Voters turned down a $98.6 million request by more than 6,500 votes in that race.

In Michelle Young’s nearly 26 years with the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, she’s been a crucial key to many of the technological advancements the county has seen during her tenure.

… She completed a Master’s in Public Administration from Western Michigan University in 1992. She also attended the Grand Rapids Community College Police Academy to move from corrections to patrol. And she decided to start the supervisory track, taking an exam and an oral interview to become sergeant.

East Grand Rapids mayor facing a challenger in Nov. 3 election

East Grand Rapids residents will decide if current mayor Amna Seibold will continue to preside over the City Commission for another four years when they go to the polls on Nov. 3. Seibold, who stepped into the slot four years ago, is being challenged by local real-estate agent Bill Templin.

Aquinas volleyball picks up four wins at AQ/Cornerstone Crossover

Grand Rapids, MI- The Aquinas College volleyball team played host to four non-conference opponents this weekend as part of the annual Aquinas/Cornerstone Crossover. The Saints played a pair of games on both Friday evening and Saturday morning, and came out victorious in all four games. Aquinas is now 17-12 on the season.

In the opening match on Friday, the Saints defeated Rochester College 3-1. Aquinas dominated the first set 25-10, but the Warriors bounced back to win the second 25-23. Aquinas would claim the next two sets 25-18 and 25-21 to earn the victory. Sophomore Kenzie Haley’s (Grand Rapids/Forest Hills Eastern) career high 17 kills spearheaded the attack, while Brooke Wieland (Lake Odessa/Lakewood) supplied 46 assists, 15 digs, and three aces. Katlyn Agren (Cadillac/GRCC) led four Saints in double digit digs with 24.

Armen Oumedian Receives Philanthropy Award

On Friday, October 23, 2015 Grand Rapids Community Foundation will have its annual donor celebration and present the Jack Chaille Community Philanthropy Award to Armen Oumedian, retired senior Vice President of Rapistan.

… Oumedian is an active and hands-on philanthropist with a keen interest in Science, Technology, Education and Math (STEM) education. He’s been a long-time supporter of his alma mater Kettering University, and of Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC). He’s created and funded a number of programs that encourage innovation and learning, including GRCC’s Armen Awards, which give cash awards to faculty innovation projects. He created a Community Foundation scholarship for students at GRCC and Kettering University. Armen has been a member of the Kettering University Alumni Board and the Porter Hills Communities and Services Board. Oumedian was named the GRCC Alumni of the Year and was also awarded Kettering’s Alumni Service Award. He’s an avid supporter of the Community Foundation’s Challenge Scholars program and holds the distinction of having attended Harrison Park School, one of the Challenge Scholars schools.
