College wins $2.1M federal grant for advising system

Grand Rapids Community College was one of three Michigan colleges and the only in West Michigan college to receive the five-year 2019 Strengthening Institutions Program grant, according to the U.S. Department of Education.

A college will start a training program focused on jobs related to water, public works, clean energy and river restoration projects after a bank’s $150,000 donation.
After the grant from JPMorgan Chase, GRCC is teaming up with the cities of Grand Rapids and Kentwood, the nonprofit Grand Rapids Whitewater, the Grand Rapids Chamber and the Grand Rapids Downtown Development Authority’s Whitewater Project team on the West Michigan Clean Water and Environmental Certifications Program.
College producing Giant Awards

… To celebrate the season, culinary students at Grand Rapids Community College’s Secchia Institute for Culinary Education are creating a sugary wonderland filled with ballerinas in stained-glass sugar and bells made from blown sugar in DeVos Performance Hall in December.

Richard Van Oss will present a recital ushering in the holiday season at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 1 as part of the Free@3 Concert Series. He will perform on First Reformed Church’s Casavant organ. The church, which sponsors Free@3, is at 630 State St., Holland.
… (Julia) Cosgrove holds a masters of music in vocal performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston and a degree in performance from Taylor University. She has sung light opera roles, is a frequent soloist in many local churches, is passionate about oratorio music and is known for her 12 annual performances in Handel’s “Messiah” with the Zeeland Civic Chorus. She maintained a private studio in Boston and has previously taught at Cornerstone University, Grand Rapids Community College, and Hope College. She currently series as the director of Care Ministry at First Reformed Church in Holland.
