GRCC wins state volleyball championship

GRCC’s volleyball team captured the MCCAA title over the weekend, downing Oakland Community College by 3-1 and Muskegon Community College by 3-0.

With these wins, the No. 3-ranked Raiders improve to 25-1 overall as they enter District F play this week.

Hannah Stearns led the charge for GRCC against Oakland’s Raiders, finishing with 21 kills. Kendra DeJonge and Ally German each added 11 kills. Kayla Salyer led GRCC in blocks with six total. Three Raiders finished with double-digit digs as DeJonge finished with 17, Peyton Helsen with 14 and Lauren Helsen with 13.

Muskegon’s 3-2 win over Mott Community College setup a GRCC versus Muskegon finals— the teams’ third meeting of the season — where the Raiders again rolled to a 3-0 MCCAA championship victory.

DeJonge led the team in kills with 14, digs with 21 and aces with two. Hannah Stearns added 13 kills with a +.400 hitting percentage. Salyer added four blocks along with seven kills and an ace while Lauren Helsen’s 27 assists paired nicely with 11 digs.

Regional action will kick off for GRCC on Nov. 4 at St. Clair County Community College in Port Huron.
