Soyla Lange knew college would be challenging, but she saw it as a way to be a good role model to her children.
“Coming back to college was a huge transition,” she said. “My experience was obviously different than many students — married and with children, there was no time for a social life.”
But Lange found a way to make her mark on campus: as a peer mentor in GRCC’s TRIO/Student Support Services program. TRIO works with first-generation college students who meet federal income guidelines.
Lange has been on the Dean’s List — for students with GPAs of 3.5 to 3.999 — three times. She has made the President’s List — for students with a 4.0 GPA — twice. She also received an Academic Achievement MICAPP Scholarship.
“These past months have prepared me to be an independent student,” she said. “They’ve given me the confidence to move on to a four-year college knowing that I will always have my TRIO advisors’ support.”
Lange will receive an Associate of Arts with MACRAO at commencement, which takes place 7 p.m. April 28 at Ford Fieldhouse, 226 Lyon St. NE. She plans to study sustainable business at Aquinas College this fall.
