Delta Pi Alpha inducts 92 students; Tammy Vander Werf receives Arthur Andrews Award

A Secchia Institute for Culinary Education student received GRCC’s Arthur Andrews Award during a recent reception honoring members of Delta Pi Alpha.

Tammy Vander Werf received this year’s award, which goes to the Delta Pi Alpha student with the highest cumulative GPA and the greatest number of honor points. This spring, she will receive a culinary arts degree with an emphasis in baking and pastry arts.

Vander Werf is a leader among her peers said Secchia Institute for Culinary Education assistant professor Dan Gendler. “Tammy is a great student — intelligent, deep-thinking and collaborative,” he said.

The Arthur Andrews Award is given in memory of Grand Rapids Junior College’s second president. While the award recognizes the student with the highest GPA, being a member of Delta Pi Alpha is itself an honor. That recognition goes only to students with excellent academic achievements from the top 5 percent of the graduating class. Recently, 92 students were inducted into Delta Pi Alpha.

Vander Werf was among 13 students who were honored during the ceremony for achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. The other students are:
