Monica Hale always knew that she would start at GRCC: “I have lived in West Michigan all of my life, and GRCC is renowned for being a great stepping stone to other universities.”

Hale found that GRCC met those high expectations, with online courses being especially convenient.

“The tipping point for me was making it through my first semester and not only meeting but exceeding my goals,” she said. “It helped me realize my potential and that with hard work, dedication and commitment, attaining my associate degree was within reach.”

As she’s worked toward her associate degree in business administration, she’s found inspiration in business instructor Dawn Mumford.

“Not only is she a brilliant instructor with a passion to teach, her accomplishments in her professional career are evidence that women can shatter the glass ceiling,” Hale said.

Hale is an asset to any classroom, Mumford said.

“She is the type of student every professor wants in their class,” Mumford said. “She worked diligently to understand the material and actively participated in class discussions. She asked questions to further her understanding, and she was always willing to share her knowledge.”

Hale will receive her associate degree at commencement, which takes place 7 p.m. April 28 at Ford Fieldhouse, 226 Lyon St. NE. She plans to transfer to Ferris State University to earn a bachelor’s degree.
