Geography student April Shirey wins Aquinas scholarship

Congratulations to April Shirey, who has been awarded Aquinas College’s Hruby Scholarship!

Named in honor of Norbert Hruby, Aquinas’ second president, the scholarship is awarded to stellar transfer students who demonstrate a history of service and leadership through volunteer work. Shirey, president of GRCC’s chapter of  Gamma Theta Upsilon, plans to start work on a bachelor’s degree at Aquinas in fall 2017. She is the third GRCC geography student in recent years to receive the scholarship. She also received the Dr. Phillip Sigal Peace and Justice Memorial Scholarship, awarded by the GRCC’s English Department.

In addition to her work for the geographical honor society, Shirey presents papers at academic conferences, tutors students in a number of disciplines and works as a production coordinator for events taking place throughout the United States.
